IVM is dedicated to fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship through cutting-edge scientific research and education. As the Netherlands’ oldest environmental research institute, established in 1971, IVM has evolved into a global leader in sustainability science. Boasting a team of 200+ professionals, including staff, PhDs, and Postdocs, IVM consistently earns top marks for scientific excellence.

Our unique strength lies in unraveling the complexities of natural-societal systems using innovative interdisciplinary approaches

IVM comprises four distinct research groups, each specializing in critical environmental domains.

The Water and Climate Risk department explores the interplay between society and hydrological and climate systems. The Environmental Geography department delves into the geographic dynamics of human-environment systems. Meanwhile, the Environmental Economics department focuses on the economic aspects of various environmental themes, and the Environmental Policy Analysis department examines governance for sustainability, emphasizing institutional and political dimensions of environmental change.

As an innovative institution, IVM not only pioneers impactful research but also educates the next generation of environmental leaders. With over 170 MSc students and 50 PhD students annually, IVM is committed to instilling a comprehensive understanding of environmental sciences. Join us in our mission to drive sustainable development and address pressing environmental challenges.

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) serves as the Dutch national weather service, undertaking primary responsibilities such as weather forecasting and the monitoring of weather, climate, air quality, and seismic activity. Additionally, KNMI functions as the national research and information center for meteorology, climate, air quality, and seismology.

Situated in a densely-populated, technologically advanced delta region, the Netherlands faces heightened risks of human and economic loss during disasters. Consequently, safety, habitability, and accessibility have remained focal points on the political and social agenda.

Key concerns encompass the impacts of extreme weather events, climate change, sea level rise, earthquakes, air quality, volcanic ash, and solar storms.

KNMI’s mission involves advising and warning society to mitigate risks related to weather, climate, and seismology, with the goal of minimizing damage and injuries. Leveraging high-quality knowledge, advanced technology, and an extensive observation network, KNMI delivers products and services that contribute to the safety, accessibility, sustainability, and prosperity of the Netherlands.

The Dutch Association of Insurers is the trade association of Dutch non-life and life insurers. The association represents more than 95 percent of all insurers in the Netherlands. Reinsurers, insurtechs, premium pension institutions and companies involved in bank savings are also affiliated with the association. As an advocate for all their members, they respond to social developments and connect the insurance sector with society.

Every day the Dutch Association of Insurers is in dialogue with the government, The Hague and European politics, various other (branch) organizations, regulators, NGOs and the media.

Together with members and other stakeholders, the association works on solutions to problems relating to, for example, old-age provisions or social security in The Netherlands, but also to the security of residential homes or the consequences of climate change. Climate change and sustainability are key topics for the Dutch Association of Insurers. Therefore, they built partnerships with The Dutch Royal Weather Institute (KNMI) and the Insititute for Environmental Studies (IVM), among others.

The Dutch Association of Insurers is societal partner of the following research programmes: Red&Blue, ACCRUE, PIISA, Naturance, Future Flood Risk Management Tech and Reshape.

Achmea is a large Dutch financial conglomerate that provides life and non-life insurance, mortgages and pension and (real estate) investment services to clients in the Netherlands and abroad. Core brands of Achmea include Centraal Beheer, Interpolis and Zilveren Kruis. Achmea serves almost half of all Dutch households via at least one of their financial products.

Internationally, Achmea is active in amongst others Canada, Greece and Australia.

By collaboration with the Institute for Environmental studies (de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), Achmea aims to attain more insight into the financial risks of climate impacts in the short, medium and long run.

In particular, Achmea is interested in the climate-related risks of its insurance, banking and investment management division. In addition, Achmea aspires to increase collaboration within the financial sector and between the academic sector and the financial sector on research in climate-related financial risks.

Lastly, through these types of research collaborations, Achmea wants to fulfill a societal role as a knowledge producer on climate-related financial risks. Achmea therefore invites other (commercial) organizations that also face the challenges of a changing climate to proactively contribute to the mitigation of and adaptation to climate change by joining the Climate Finance Academy!

Rabobank is a cooperative bank with a mission. Together with its stakeholders, Rabobank has been dedicated to creating a future-proof society and tackling major societal challenges for 125 years. In the Netherlands, we serve retail and corporate clients; globally we focus on the food and agriculture sector. Our starting point is: together we can achieve more than we could individually.

That’s why we team up with our customers and partners to address important social, economic and environmental issues.

In particular, we focus on three key transitions where we can make a meaningful difference: the sustainable food and energy transitions, plus the transition to a more inclusive society where everyone can pursue their ambitions. Climate change represents one of the biggest challenges in all of these areas.

There is a need to produce more food than ever before with fewer resources and less favourable climate conditions. At the same time, our lives and businesses need to become more sustainable and adapt to the more extreme weather conditions. Rabobank participates with the Climate Finance Academy to improve our scientific understanding of the risks, challenges and opportunities posed by climate change, so that we can better serve our clients in these key transitions.
